Investing: Looking For Opportunities Outside Of Your Country

First of all, one should understand that there are many opportunities in many places in the world besides your own country. There always have been and there always will be. For instance, you know 50 years ago most people didn't know Japan had a stock market just on the verge of becoming one of the greatest success stories of the 20th century. So always be on the lookout for other markets, other opportunities.

India: "I am not a big fan of Mr. Modi"

I invested in India before Mr. Modi was elected. I owned the Indian shares, but then after few weeks seeing that he did not do much, I sold Indian shares. I have had no position in India since. Modi has done some nice things. He has done a few small things. He has not done any big good thing as far as I can think. I am not a big fan of Mr. Modi. He gets great, great, great publicity all over the world and he is very well liked all over the world. But as far as the real policy (is concerned), I have not seen much dramatic change, yet.

Zimbabwe: I Bought A Few Stocks Recently

I bought a few shares in Zimbabwe recently. Not much, just to get me to remember Zimbabwe. You know, 50 years ago Zimbabwe was one of the richest countries in the British Commonwealth. It's been totally destroyed totally destroyed by a crazy dictator over the next 37 years. But it is a great opportunity now.

Emerging Markets: The Problem With Turkey

The problem from everybody's point of view is that Turkey is in a bad neighborhood. There's nothing wrong with Turkey, I love Turkey but the neighborhood is not particularly stable right now and there are lots of things going on in the neighborhood which could or could not badly affect Turkey.

Emerging Markets: Venezuela Is High On My List

It's high on my list but I'm not good at timing. But I think there will probably be a better time later to buy Venezuela. But yes, it's high on my list.

Emerging Markets: Colombia

Q: How much time and effort are you putting into your research? Because you mentioned yesterday Colombia, you mentioned Russia, you mentioned North Korea.

A: Well, you should know about these countries because Colombia had a 50-year civil war that's come to an end and I have learned over the years that when a war comes to an end or a civil war there are usually astonishing opportunities.

Everybody Owns The Same Stocks

Everybody owns the same things, it is eve more narrowly focused now than in previous bull markets because it is now so easy to buy exchange traded funds (ETFs). If you own stocks that are in ETFs, I want to know what they are. These are the stocks that have not been going through the roof, that are still cheap.

India Will Be Worse Affected Than Other Markets

Nearly all markets will be affected in the same way especially India because Mr. Modi is now coming up with a capital gains tax. So now the Indian stock market has the problem of having gone up for a long time and for a long way and now you will have a capital gains tax. India will probably be worse affected than other markets.

The Reason For The Stock Market Correction

Whenever there is an overdue stock market correction people always look for a reason. I can give you some reasons: the main reason is that it has gone up too long, too far, too fast but interest rates are also going higher and there are problems in Washington with the government. There are many reasons. But essentially it is because it went up without a correction and now we are having one.

Stocks: When To Buy, When To Sell

An old stock market quote from the archives,

"Historically, you buy stocks when they're yielding 6 percent and selling at eight times earnings. You sell them when they're at 22 times earnings and yielding 2 percent."

The Reason Why I'm Investing in Russia

In my experience I have learned that if you find something that's hated, that has a lot of value and things are getting better you probably will do fine and that's why I'm investing in Russia. (Market Vector Russia ETF Trust (RSX), iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Index ETF (EEM))

Q: Where To Invest (Iran, Nigeria or Kazakhstan)?

Iran, Nigeria or Kazakhstan... Well, my first reaction is Iran but it would be very, very difficult for me because I'm an American. So, I guess I would have to say Kazakhstan. (iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Index ETF (EEM))

Chinese Shares: My Plan

I haven't sold any Chinese shares and I have been investing there for decades. My plan is that my children someday are going to look back and say, "He must have been very smart, oh! God look at all these Chinese shares, we've got rich!" That's my plan but if things develop in certain ways I'll have to sell, I mean if for instance a bubble develops I have to sell. So, I may sell some of my Chinese shares between here and there. (iShares FTSE/Xinhua China 25 Index ETF (FXI), iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Index ETF (EEM))

The Markets May Drop 40-50% In The Next Downturn

In America, I'm going to use America as an example since it's less sensitive, it's been over eight years since we had a big correction in the American stock market. It's well overdue.

Historically we've had them every 4 to 8 years. When we have big market corrections in America they usually go around 40 or 50 percent. This one will go down 40 or 50 percent and it would be the worst in our lifetime because the debt is now so much higher than it was even in 2008. I'm Very Bullish On Russia

I first went to Russia in 1966 as a student and I came away saying this will never work and came away bearish for the next 48 years. But now I'm very, very bullish on Russia.

Russia is certainly a hated market there's no question and whenever you find a hated and something there is changing for the better and I find changes have taken place and are taking place in Russia then I would suggest you to put some Russian Rubles in your pocket or you might try the Russian ETF that might be even better than the Russian Rubles but I own both.
